Freelance Professionals Foreigners (D type visa)

Every non-EU citizen can work and reside as a freelancer in Bulgaria given that the respective approval has been given by the Bulgarian Employment Agency. The residence permit on the grounds of freelancing is for initial period of 1 year (subject to extension for another 12 months).

Procedure:

The application for issuing a long-stay visa is submitted only in the diplomatic and consular missions at the permanent place of residence of the applicant or the missions accredited in the state of the applicant’s permanent residence.

Persons staying legally in a third country, different from the country of their permanent residence, may, as an exception, apply in this third country after explaining the reasons thereof and if their return to the state of permanent residence is guaranteed.

The executive director of the National Employment Agency takes a decision within 30 days from the documents submission.

  • Applicant must be over 18 years
  • Applicant must be of good health and clean criminal record
  • Applicant must have a detailed freelance plan (showing assignments) in Bulgaria
  • Applicant must show evidence of sufficient funds to sustain the stay at Bulgaria

Which documents do I need to apply for the Freelance Professionals Foreigners (D type visa)?

9 Document Required

  • Visa application form
  • Detailed Freelancing plan with assignments
  • A photocopy of the first page of the foreign travel document
  • A photocopy of the last Bulgaria and Schengen visas or visas for the UK and the US, if any
  • A full color photograph 3,5 cm х 4,5 cm against light-colored background
  • A medical insurance valid for the EU member states for the whole period of the trip, covering all costs for repatriation and for urgent medical care and emergency hospital treatment for the period of the stay indicated in the visa. The insurance amount cannot be less than 30 thousand euro
  • Evidence of financial means and sufficient to sustain the stay
  • Copy of the technical passport of the car of the trip
  • For under-aged children travelling without their parents or trustees the following documents shall be submitted: A copy of the birth certificate; original and photocopy of a power of attorney notary certified by both parents/ trustees or by one parent trustee that they agree their child to travel unaccompanied by them
